Providence Repair Shops

The Providence Shops were the main repair and fabrication shop for the Hudson Coal Company. Here thousands of mine cars are repaired or built annually. Locomotives, both steam and electric are overhauled. Motors of various types are rebuilt. Parts of hoists, pumps, conveyors and other equipment are built, repaired or installed. Over a hundred men were employed by Hudson Coal at this facility with the sole purpose of repairing and overhauling the machinery and equipment used to keep the mines running. This is one aspect of anthracite mining that gets greatly overlooked. At the repair shops, to which every kind of equipment used around the mines comes in at one time or another for rebuilding or repair, one can see the variety and extent of the appliances and machinery used in the operation of anthracite collieries.
