This subsidence happened during the flood of June 06. The mine filled with water from the 4 days of intense rainfall we had and when enough pressure built up inside the mine the concrete cap on this airshaft exploded. So much water was coming up out of this shaft that it formed a river through the neighborhood and down eighth street until it reached the Lackawanna River. The Federal Office of Surface Mining is investigating this and is trying to determine a solution to make sure this doesnt happen again. We took these pictures the day of the subsidence for the landowners for their insurance claim.
