Lansford No 9 Mine

Explore the world’s oldest, continuously operated, deep Anthracite coal mine, opened in 1855 and closed in 1972. Work began to reopen the mine to visitors as a tourist attraction in 1994, and the first tours began in June of 2002. Visitors can tour the No. 9 Coal Mine and Museum, located at 9 West Dock St., in Lansford, PA.  Ride by rail 1600 feet into the mountain on our mine train pulled by a vintage electric mine motor and then depart on a walking tour once inside.  Inspect the “Go Devil’ machine as you approach the 700 foot deep mine shaft and original elevator cages.  View an original mine can and the mule tender boy.  Walk through the original mule way, take a look up the ladder and chute into the the breast where the miners used to work daily.  See the original underground mine hospital carved out of solid rock.  Experience over 160 years of mining history!  Outside the mine, visit the No. 9 Mining Museum located inside the original 1912 wash shanty building which houses one of the largest collections in the region. Browse the gift shop for unique souvenirs, books and gift items.  Free picnic pavilion use and ample free parking.
