Operated by the Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Company, the Middle Creek Shaft was located near Tremont and Donaldson. It was sunk around 1874. On March 3rd, 1897, an explosion of gas occurred at the shaft, killing two men. It is said the mine was known for high levels of gas, and the explosion was caused by one of the men opening his safety lamp in the mine. The explosion then caused the timbers and coal vein to catch fire.
Undated postcard of very early days of the shaft.
